Ingredients

  • For the Mashed Potatoes

Instructions

  1. Add the peeled and quartered potatoes to a large pot, cover with water, and bring to a boil. Cook until fork-tender.

  2. While the potatoes are cooking, divide the ground beef into 4-5 portions and shape into hamburger steaks. Season both sides evenly with onion powder, garlic powder, black pepper, and ground mustard. You can add salt if you'd like, but I usually skip it since the gravy has plenty of flavor and salt.

  3. Heat a large skillet over medium heat. Add the hamburger steaks and cook for about 5-6 minutes per side, or until cooked to your liking. Remove from the skillet and set aside.

  4. Carefully remove about half of the grease from the skillet, leaving some behind for flavor. Add the sliced onion and cook until softened and beginning to caramelize.

  5. Add the French onion soup, brown gravy mix, ½ cup water, and Worcestershire sauce to the skillet. Stir well, scraping up all those flavorful browned bits from the bottom.

  6. Add the hamburger steaks back to the skillet and spoon the onion gravy over the top. Let everything simmer together for a few minutes until the gravy has thickened and the steaks are heated through.

  7. Drain the cooked potatoes and return them to the pot or mixer. Add butter, milk, heavy cream, salt, and black pepper. Mash or mix until creamy and smooth. Add a little more milk or cream if needed to reach your preferred consistency.

  8. Spoon a generous helping of mashed potatoes onto each plate, top with a hamburger steak, and pour plenty of onion gravy over everything.
